Cup success for Reds

10:26am Monday 30th August 2010

Newcastle Emlyn 2 Dinas Powys 1 A fine all-round team performance gave the Reds victory and a place in round one proper of the Welsh Cup against a battling Dinas Powys side led by former Cardiff City ace Michael Heywood.

The MacWhirter Welsh League Division Two rivals were evenly matched for lengthy periods but Emlyn had that bit extra and deserved their passage.

Skipper Sean Jones made a welcome return for the Teifisiders after nearly a year on the sidelines through injury and he oozed class and confidence in a central midfield role.

Gary Evans, Jody Thomas, Huw Jones and Kieran Davies were solid in defence for the homesters and behind them goalkeeper Cutlan handled safely.

Emlyn went in front midway through the opening 45 minutes through Anthony Owen who ran into the penalty area and clipped a shot past Rhodri Phillips, a member of the Dinas Powys youth squad who was drafted into the first team at the eleventh hour.

The lead was doubled early in the second period when a visiting defender had the misfortune of netting an own goal.

With 12 minutes remaining the south Walians halved the deficit when Jody Thomas was rather harshly adjudged to have brought down Rob Price to concede a penalty.

Mark Dunford netted from the spot but the Reds held out.
